The Friends of Openshaw Park, Manchester asked me to do something with a poplar tree. It had lost some of it's branches and had others removed for safety. If it was not turned into a sculpture, it would have been completely felled and carted away to a landfill site.
The tree was an interesting shape, an oval base with one side of the trunk at an unusual angle to the vertical. The thought is that two trunks grew out of the seed and these had fused together in one tree. I was surprised to find that there was no rot in the tree although there were some nails hidden some inches below the outer surface which had disastrous effect on my chain saw.
