I was asked to carve a tree stump into something and the commissioner had enough money to pay for one day's work. Given a choice, I always carve the human figure or faces, so as the tree could be seen from two view points, I suggested two faces. I wanted to do the commissioner and his wife who had characterful faces, but they suggested I carve the children next door. Children have such unlived in faces that it is difficult to find defining features, but I gave it a go.
The faces are about three times life size and at that scale a face can be mainly carved directly with a chain saw. The right hand face has been carved almost completely with a chain saw. When I removed the bark at the top of the tree stump, I found that there was a hollow in the middle of where I had planned to put the second of the faces. Some quick rethinking was required. Time did not allow the repositioning of the scaffolding and I could not get into a safe position to carve that face with a chain saw. So the left hand face was finished with hand tools as these I could manage safely at an awkward angle
