Lindley C of E
Infant School asked to carve something, in one day, on a
dying 2 metre high cherry tree in the school
grounds. As the school has a Nature Group called
‘Observing Wildlife at Lindley School - OWLS for short - the
choice of subject was fairly obvious. I am not a
wildlife expert, so I based my design on a specimen in the Cliffe
Castle Museum in
Keighly.
As I
need to visualise the finished result whilst it is still in the block,
I made a full sized plastercine model.
The day of the carving dawned bright with a sprinkling of snow. It continued with snow showers and a freezing wind. It was so cold that the camera refused too work. Using the chain saw for the roughing out was ok but holding the hand tools for the detailed work was a bit difficult
One year on, I visited the site and took some more pictures. In that year the wood had taken on a silver sheen and lost the raw wood colours
