Bingley Eagle

As part of Big Arts Week I gave a workshop on sculpture to a class of GCSE students at Bingley Grammar School, Bingley, West Yorkshire.   I took a lump of sycamore and as a first step got them to make a clay model of the raw log.    This got them working in 3D.     Then they were to draw designs to fit into that clay model.     This was difficult as they had to think in 3D.     Finally they had to carve their design out of the their clay model.

The deal was that I would carve the best design out of the wood; best in that it made the best use of the wood rather than prettiest.    I only had the afternoon to complete the carving, so I cheated a little and picked a simple design.
