Alabaster Head

Alabaster on Gritstone Base   -  Height 16 inches

I swapped a piece of wood for this piece of alabaster and then had to find something to do with it.     Alabaster is a soft stone that can easily be worked with hand held tools.    It was a suggestion of a Teddy Boy hair cut ( this was the late 60s) that gave me the idea for the work.   The hair is untouched and has a natural weathered surface.    The face has been carved with a penknife and polished with wet and dry paper.    The mouth was a cheeky pushing to the limits of what is a soft friable material.   The base was found at the bottom of a stone wall in Staffordshire.
